Office hours and the "nine to five" culture
A London office worker starts between 09:00 and 09:30 and finishes between 17:00 and 17:30, Monday to Friday. The 8-hour day is standard, with an unpaid lunch break of 30 to 60 minutes, usually taken between 12:30 and 14:00. Flexible and hybrid working have stretched the edges, but the core B2B contact window remains 09:00-17:00.
Professional services firms (law, accounting, consultancy) tend toward 09:00-17:30 to cover a full client day. Call centres and customer service desks often run to 18:00 or 20:00, but the person you need in accounts or procurement is almost certainly gone by 17:00.
Bank and financial hours: high street vs City of London
| Type | Hours | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| High-street banks | 09:00-17:00 Mon-Fri; some Sat 09:00-12:00 | Branch hours vary; check your local branch online |
| City of London financial markets | 08:00-16:30 GMT/BST | Overlaps with European and US trading windows |
| Bank of England MPC | Interest rate decisions at 12:00 on Thursdays (8 times per year) | Announcements are live-streamed; no set "open hours" |
| CHAPS high-value payments | 06:00-18:00 weekdays | Same-day settlement; cut-off is strict |
| BACS direct credits/debits | Three-day cycle; submission cut-off typically 22:00 | Funds arrive on the third working day |
High-street banks almost never open on Sundays. Saturday opening is limited to a few branches per town, usually 09:00-12:00. For in-person banking, go Monday, Friday before 17:00.
London Stock Exchange trading hours
The London Stock Exchange operates a two-phase schedule:
- Auction (opening call): 07:50
- Continuous trading: 08:00-16:30
This applies year-round, but the time zone changes. In winter (GMT, UTC+0), the 08:00 open is 08:00 UTC; in summer (BST, UTC+1), the 08:00 open is 07:00 UTC. For exact GMT/BST schedules, see the London Stock Exchange hours guide.
The 16:30 close is deliberate. It coincides with the New York open, creating a 3.5-hour overlap (13:00-16:30 GMT / 12:00-16:30 BST) that drives most inter-market trading.
Shop and retail hours: supermarkets, high street, Sunday rules
| Day | Typical hours | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Monday-Saturday | 08:00-20:00 (high street); 06:00-23:00 (supermarkets) | Many supermarkets open 24 hours in cities |
| Sunday (England & Wales) | 10:00-16:00 (large shops only) | Restricted to 6 continuous hours between 10:00-18:00 |
| Sunday (Scotland) | No restrictions | Large shops can open any hours |
| Sunday (Northern Ireland) | 13:00-18:00 | Large shops restricted |
| Christmas Day | All large shops closed | Christmas Day (Trading) Act 2004 |
| Easter Sunday | No statutory restrictions | Many large shops close voluntarily |
The key rule for England and Wales: a shop larger than 280 m² can open for only 6 consecutive hours on a Sunday, and the shop chooses which 6 between 10:00 and 18:00. The full legal detail is in the UK Sunday trading laws guide.

Pub licensing hours and "last orders"
Standard licensing hours in England and Wales:
- Monday, Saturday: 11:00-23:00
- Sunday: 12:00-22:30
"Last orders" is typically called at 22:45-23:00 Monday, Saturday, and 22:15-22:30 on Sunday. After that, "drinking-up time" allows 20 minutes to finish your drink.
Many pubs hold extended licences (24-hour, or until 01:00 on weekends) but the default remains 23:00. If no extended licence is displayed and the clock hits 23:00, the bar closes.
School hours and term dates
| School type | Start | Finish |
|---|---|---|
| Primary | 08:45-09:00 | 15:15-15:30 |
| Secondary | 08:30-09:00 | 15:00-15:45 |
School year structure: - Autumn term: Early September to mid-December (half-term late October) - Spring term: Early January to early April (half-term mid-February) - Summer term: Mid-April to mid/late July (half-term late May/early June)
Exact dates vary by local authority. For the 2026/2027 year, see the UK school holiday dates guide.
School run traffic peaks at 08:30-09:00 and 15:00-15:45. Meetings scheduled at 09:30 or 10:00 avoid the worst congestion. The October half-term often coincides with the clock change weekend, affecting staffing and customer footfall.
