The Day After the 25th: A UK Bank Holiday

Boxing Day is 26 December, a bank holiday in England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. In 2026, Christmas Day is a Friday, so Boxing Day falls on Saturday 26 December. Because the day itself is a weekend, the substitute bank holiday is Monday 28 December.

The day shares its date with Saint Stephen's Day in the Christian calendar. In the United Kingdom, "Boxing Day" is the common name; "Saint Stephen's Day" is used in Ireland and parts of Europe. Both names refer to the same 24-hour period.

Why 'Boxing'? Christmas Boxes and Alms Boxes

No single origin is certain, but two explanations dominate.

Christmas boxes for servants and tradespeople. In British tradition, servants worked on Christmas Day to serve their employers' family dinner. The following day they received the day off and a "Christmas box": a gift of money, food, or leftover treats from the household. Tradespeople such as milkmen, postal workers, and errand runners also collected seasonal tips in small clay boxes.

Church alms boxes opened on Saint Stephen's Day. Parishes placed alms boxes in churches to collect donations for the poor. The boxes were opened on 26 December, Saint Stephen's feast day, and the contents distributed to those in need. This theory ties the name directly to the Christian calendar.

Both explanations involve a box. The name "Boxing Day" appears in print from the 1830s onward and became standard across Britain during the Victorian era.

Boxing Day as a Bank Holiday: Legal Status

Boxing Day is a designated bank holiday in the whole of the United Kingdom. The Bank Holidays Act 1871 first established it, alongside Easter Monday, Whit Monday, and the first Monday in August. Today it is covered by the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971.

When 26 December falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the bank holiday shifts to the next available weekday. In 2026, Boxing Day is a Saturday; the substitute bank holiday is Monday 28 December. In 2027, Boxing Day falls on a Sunday, so the observed bank holiday becomes Tuesday 28 December. The Monday is taken by the Christmas Day substitute: Christmas Day 2027 is a Saturday, observed on Monday 27 December.

The bank holiday status means most offices, banks, and many businesses close. Public transport runs on a reduced Sunday-style timetable. Shops are not legally required to close on Boxing Day itself, unlike Christmas Day, where large shops must shut under the Christmas Day (Trading) Act 2004. Many retailers open early for the Boxing Day sales.

Modern Boxing Day: Sales, Football, and the Hunt

Boxing Day has acquired strong modern traditions.

Major retail sales. Boxing Day is the biggest shopping day of the year for many UK retailers. Stores open early with deep discounts on electronics, clothing, and home goods. Online sales now start on Christmas Day evening, but the in-store rush remains a fixture.

Full Premier League football fixture list. The Premier League schedules an entire round of matches on Boxing Day. Unlike the usual spread across Saturday and Sunday, Boxing Day fixtures pack the day from lunchtime through late evening. Lower-league and Scottish football also run their own programmes.

Fox hunting in modified form. The Hunting Act 2004 banned traditional fox hunting with dogs in England and Wales. Legal trail hunting, following an artificial scent, still takes place on Boxing Day in many rural areas. These meets draw large crowds and remain a cultural marker, especially in the Midlands and the South West.

Boxing Day also features the start of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race, broadcast from Australia, and, in some families, a day for visiting relatives or watching film repeats on television.

When Boxing Day Lands on a Weekend

Because bank holidays are defined by the calendar date, not the day of the week, the rules for weekend falls are straightforward.

If 26 December is a Saturday, the bank holiday moves to the following Monday. Christmas Day also shifts if it falls on a weekend, usually to the Monday, pushing Boxing Day's substitute to the Tuesday. If 26 December is a Sunday, the bank holiday moves to the following Tuesday. Christmas Day on a Sunday shifts to the Monday, so the two substitutes occupy consecutive weekdays.

In 2026, 26 December is a Saturday. The substitute bank holiday is Monday 28 December. In 2027, 26 December is a Sunday. Christmas Day is a Saturday, so Christmas Day is observed on Monday 27 December, and Boxing Day is observed on Tuesday 28 December.
